On Wednesday, April 29th, we spent the day planting trees and bushes in our hedgerow. We planted blueberry, honeyberry, elderberry, currants, pear, spicebush, mulberry, and many others. The whole day was cold and rainy. It is true what they say, farm life can be unforgiving. While we were pulling back some tarps to begin planting, something scurried quickly in peripheral sight. I jumped with glee to see it was something furry and brown. He was quick and definitely scared, but I wanted to make sure I moved him so he didn’t get squished. I picked up this little fella and Jesse got these photos. I must say, he is quite cute, and the way he looked up was very endearing. He was for sure a field mouse, but truly a drowned rat, much like us! We found a nice tree/brush area (you can see it in the background of these photos) that we wouldn’t be working near for the day, and so that was that. Mouse saved, trees planted. I suppose there are small glimmers throughout the harder days that can be forgiving. “If You Give A Mouse A Tree” by Amber Marshall If you give a mouse a tree, He would have a place to stay. If you give a mouse a tree, There he can rest or play. If you give a mouse a tree, He can stay nice and dry. If you give a mouse a tree, He may come out later to say, “hi!”
